The Fullness of Time | Novella Review *Spoilers*
i recently finished the series i absolutely loved the story...i'm so glad i stumbled upon them this year
A poem about eating your feelings? Or maybe it's saying we often indulge in things that are sad because it gives us closure. Because it's relatable and cathartic. Maybe by calling it a creature he's saying that we don't look so good when we're crying. 😅 The word friend implies so many things. It means I like you, I relate to you, I want to be close to you, I want to make you feel better. That's why he asks him if the heart is good. He either wants the heart to make a difference for his friend or he wants to eat the heart too because he is feeling similar things and wants to know if it will help.
Nice reflection, I feel that you know your subject well and have a sound mind.
Subscribed!
He did not win me over.
I absolutely loved your review. I read an old translation with formal language twice. I am eager to read the translation you suggest as it has been waiting on my shelf for about a year. Kristen is alive in my heart like Natasha, Pierre, Prince Andre, etc…Aubrey/Maturin, all are old friends I’ve fallen deeply in love with. Thank you for your heartfelt review.
I've read both translations. Most people (including most critics/reviewers) prefer the newer one, but I find the older one much more atmospheric, maybe because of the archaic language. It would be interesting to know whether Undset wrote in modern or archaic Norwegian, but I guess only a Norwegian would know this. The advantage of the new translation is that it leaves nothing out, so the story flows and is more coherent, but (see my comment below) it does make concessions to the late 20th century mind, which I think Undset doesn't. For example, today we call the northern people Saami, as Lapp is seen as derogatory; Nunnally calls them Saami, but I'm sure Erlend would have called them Lapps. Nunnally also explains the churching of women after childbirth each time this happens; this would have needed no explanation in the 14th century, perhaps not even in the early 20th century. If I ever read this book again (and I probably will) it will be the old translation.
Reminded me of Gormenghast and Phantastes as far as it's uniqueness
Absolutely this influenced Lovecraft, along with a heavy dose of Lord (sorry, i can't spell) Dunasay....
You say "um" and "uh" too much
I got that book many years ago and tried reading it and got through to the third chapter and for some reason I just couldn't stay focused on it to concentrate on the story and id fall asleep trying to read it. Maybe it was just the time of my life was causing problems as I worked so much and I never had much time to do anything but sleep and go back to work. I've still got the book in my collection as I'd always wanted to go back to it as I felt it was going to be a good story but I just am always so busy and hardly have time for reading books or have only so much time and I just have to study how to repair things and do crafting skills improvment.
You forgot to mention the overwhelming thing about the book - the way that the dialogue is written - bizarre and difficult to follow. Instead you cry about racism. The N-word was simply a term for black folks in the 19th century. If don't know that, you must not read much. To cry about it now is woke and stupid. The cook spoke little, because he spoke little English. He wanted to be Harvey's man-servant because it would mean living in a mansion. He was right. It beat working 24/7 on a small fishing boat that may go down with all hands any day.
wonderful response, was looking for something like this
Did you ever review and do a comparison between the book and 1996 movie? Also, Golly shouldn't have encouraged Harriet's spyng.
I really loved Lady Anna the pacing was excellent for a novel of its time. I didn’t feel like any page was unnecessary words which is par the course in classic novels.
There's another book in this series, Journey to Venus.
Amazing novel, far ahead of its time, and incredibly influential through its many imitators in the early 20th century. Sadly forgotten & uncredited.
I now, sadly, own all of her published work.
Why "sadly"?
Love all three parts of this book. Comparing the deathbed scenes of the three men Kristin's her life - Lavrans, Simon and Erlend - shows the depths of Undset's skill at characterisation.
Yup, first two pages are hard work, but I challenge anyone to get to the end of the first chapter and not be hooked.
That Bellow could write there's no gainsaying. It's just a pity I chose to shine a spotlight so exclusively on the inner lives of middle class middle aged over educated men I find nigh on impossible to feel any sympathy for (which is the first job of any storyteller).
Hi Jay, nice to find someone talking about my favorite children's book! The Long Secret was also great! As far as I'm concerned, they are the two greatest children's books ever written!
Indians reject being lumped into one racial group except when they want to tell you that your land belongs to them
I enjoy your talk about this book. It’s not my favorite Trollope but it’s still really good. I enjoy the romance part more than the politics. I’m counting four women of interest so far. Poor Mary Flood Jones. She loves him dearly but he forgets about her. She’s too far away and simple.
One link between Edgar Rice Burroughs and Edwin Lester Arnold is both book series have a character who's neither male nor female, An in "Lieutenant Gullivar Jones: His Vacation" and Luud in "The Chessmen of Mars," the former gets called a girl and the latter gets called a guy.
Great video and I’ve rediscovered your channel from seeing this! Funny how this all works….
My 8yr old grabbed this b/c Pilkey's Dogman were all checked out. What a nice find. I'm sure he'll enjoy it.
I'm listening to this book right now. Up to chapter 10. You didn't like it?
thank you for your review!😁
I read recently Ursule Miroue and have similar feeling about that book and was hard reading although that book ends pretty well. I would say Balzac is probably over rated. 90 novels are you kidding me? The quality has suffered. Tolstoy has two great novels that is worth 90 times ALL Balzac each! I hated the slow and boring laying out of characters one by one and out of context for half the book. Some story lines really are annoying in their being ultra exaggeration of both evil or good. Narration style is not in present tense and you cannot immerse yourself as if you are being there and relating to inner thoughts or the characters the way Tolstoy does it. But probably no one can do it like Tolstoy. Comparison is fair in one sense as both are known for naturalistic or realistic style.
no you do not get a reflection of the orange trees on the river that may be the river of bees. no.
I have the FIRST 5 books in the series, which deals with John Carter and his kids; the other books deal with other people on Mars. Edgar Rice Burroughs is, or should be, ranked along with Robert E. Howard as one of the great Sword and Sorcery - Fantasy Adventure writers of all time!
Incohérent analysis !
The best of the Martian books 👍
I just finished Herzog and LOVED it- and your review. Thank-you!
Thanks! And, yes, a great book!
When the Speaker asks "Is it good, friend?" I always imagined them being cautious, - maybe even afraid - having approached this creature in the desert. The question serving primarily to start a conversation in what is most undoubtable a desolate and lonely place.
Supurb book, i am albanian and this book is so good, there are words in this book that i like very much. I was looking a long time for a good book to read and this is exactly what i wanted
Great description, summary, and review of this book. Your enthusiasm shows through, and it makes me want to buy a copy sometime in the near future. And I need to look at your other reviews.
Pretty cool review. Thanks for such content. Gonna buy mine as soon as possible : )
Hi!I sense there’s so many cultures involved in this… like Islam and Christianity … really want to discuss about it!
Great Video
Thanks!
I'm so happy that i find your channel today in 25.03.2022. I like your enthusiasm how you explain everything🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Anthony Trollope has become one of my favorite authors because he has such wit and insight into human nature. I’m about halfway into Orley Farm; it’s going slowly and I’m enjoying it, but it’s not as compelling as my favorites Barchester Towers and Framley Parsonage. I enjoy your enthusiasm for Trollope.
Raban is a favourite of mine, such a great writer. I bought a second hand edition of this a few months back but only got around to reading it yesterday and it had been a while since I read anything of his.....didn't take long at all to fall under his spell again, such a great first chapter, just beautiful....that someone can sit down to a blank page and come up with that is magical.
Thanks...I had a feeling Bruno was gay too...but why??!? His attachment/obsession with Guy? His relationship with his mom? How he seems to hate women (other than his mother and Ann!)
"now there are no bonds except the flesh" why is this repeated?
Nice Video Thank you 🌷
